How the orange jersey project began

The Orange Jersey Project started as a single jersey. Keener Jerseys thought of raffling off a jersey to help Carey Price raise money for the Orange Shirt Society and raise awareness of Indian Residential Schools and the harmful impact they left on Indigenous children and families in Canada.

Keener and Carey reached out to Laio Hyrcha – Executive Director of the Orange Shirt Society to discuss an auction. From there and thanks to our Premier Sponsor the Canadian Tire Foundation, the idea of the Orange Jersey Project was born, bringing to life the opportunity to raise awareness by turning the jersey into an educational component.

providing 10,000 practice jerseys to youth Hockey Players

It starts with the question, “coach, why are we wearing orange practice jerseys” but, it’s much larger than that. Through the power of sports, we can all come together to help build a stronger path toward Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

Additionally, there is a QR Code on each jersey that links to an online curriculum for learning and sharing (known as an LMS or learning management system). Each athlete and team which participates will complete this LMS in advance of receiving their jerseys to encourage learning, engagement, sharing and activities.
